Before going to apply for your license, you should know the following information:
BEFORE LICENSE
In Ohio and Michigan, no blood tests or physical examinations are required. Only in Michigan is an AIDS counseling certificate required before marriage license application. The certificate is obtained from the county health department, the Red Cross or any physician, after applicants have attended an AIDS counseling class. WHERE TO APPLY
Both the prospective bride and groom must apply together. In-state residents of Ohio and Michigan apply in the county where they live and can then be married in any county in the state. Out-of-state residents apply in the county in which they are being married.
WAITING PERIOD AFTER LICENSE
None is required in Lucas County, but that can vary in other Ohio counties. A threeday waiting period in Michigan counties is required. The Ohio license is valid for 60 days, and the Michigan license is valid for 30 days.
PROOF OF RESIDENCY OF MORE THAN THIRTY DAYS
Lucas County accepts a valid driver's license or state ID card. Social Security verification may vary by county. Monroe County, MI, residency is determined by the address on a driver's license.
PROOF OF AGE
In Lucas County, a birth certificate is required for all applicants who have never been married. In Monroe County, MI, a certified birth certificate is required for women and men under 25. For those people over 25, a driver's license is proof of age.
LEGAL AGE OF CONSENT
In both Ohio and Michigan, it is 18 years of age. For those under 18, call license bureau for more information.
IF EITHER PERSON IS DIVORCED
In Lucas County, the final papers from the most recent divorce are required. Information concerning all other divorces is requested, but papers are not necessary. In Monroe County, MI, only the most recent divorce papers are needed with the court seal and the Judge's signature on them.
IF PREVIOUS SPOUSE DIED
A certified death certificate is needed in Lucas County. No proof is needed in Monroe County, MI.
COST OF LICENSE
