Our chess league is organized by
Ken Meinecke (Maumee Valley High School),
Dr. Corey Leonhard (Sylvania Southview High School)
The Greater Toledo High School Chess League has 15 high schools represented in three divisions.
Four of the schools field two teams! The regular season runs November and December with
matches on Mondays and Wednesdays. The top two schools of the three divisions then enter into playoff rounds
in January.
Players compete to improve their league rankings. Higher ranked players play each other
to keep competition keen and to challenge each individual player to improve. The points available each game
depends on the difference between rankings of the two players (see the bottom of a match recording sheet for the
table). The game winner gets the available points from the looser. Hence both players ranks change after
every game.
The highest ranked players represent their schools in matches as a team. Each school team
consists of four boards (players). A win counts as one point and a draw as a half point toward the school score.
The school team with the highest number wins the match.
School trophies are presented to division winners and league winners. Individual
trophies are presented to the winners of the Beach Tournament.
